I have been posting on this site for maybe six years now. Originally it was meant to be about a, well, gaijin learning Japanese. Quickly it began to include posts about Jpop and other Japanese culture, and then I went more and more off the rails until I barely talked about learning Japanese at all.
I realized today that that doesn’t even make sense. Not only did it probably destroy the site (something I don’t care as much as you’d think about), but the posts didn’t quite fit the theme of this blog. After all, this blog is about a Gaijin Learning Japanese. Not a Gaijin being a Gaijin even in his own culture. Which I am, and I will write more about that, well… on…
So today I spun up another site at americangaijin.blog. I moved as many of the off-topic posts as I could find over there, and deleted them from this blog. Now this blog will be about learning Japanese again, and only about learning Japanese.
If (and I suspect there will be no takers) anyone wants to continue seeing the kind of non Japanese learning stuff I used to post here, you can go there, and be enlightened. Or not.
I did not do a perfect job. Quite frankly, there’s a lot of content, and it’s imperfectly categorized. So I will need to go back on both sites (this one and the other one) and make them have more unique identities. I’m sure there are posts there that don’t fit anywhere but here, even though they’re not about learning Japanese. And maybe some of the Japanese culture posts will fit better here and I’ll need to put them back. I’m open to broadening the mission here that much, but as of right now, I moved those posts too.
I think this is a good move. It might destroy both sites, this one more than it was, but it might also save it. We’ll see. If not, well, at least I can be more proud of what I’ve done here than I have been.
