My Experience Commissioning an Custom Anime Figure

So as y’all may know, I’m currently working on another site called Texihabara.  It’s kinda lame right now, but I’m actually really pleased with the framework I’ve built, I think I can add to it to make it something special.  I just have to figure out what “special” means.

However, I decided it needed a mascot.  So, after a google search, I went to Etsy and found an anime artist (I will not name him on this site, but you can find a link to him on Texihabara’s legal page here if you want) .  I was really impressed.  I gave him some money, then said “I want some artwork, but I’m not sure what.”

He said “Give me a clue?”

Fair enough.  So this is what I sent him.

This is nothing but a glorified stick figure.  I basically laid out “Here’s kind of what I want, and let’s see what you can do with this.”

He responded with this:

Wowza, that’s impressive.

Y’know, I’m a lot of things.  I’m a writer, a musician, a programmer, a whiner…  I have a lot of skills.  But I’ll never understand artists.  Someone who could take that glorified stick figure and turn it into that picture is someone worth their salt as an artist.

We went through hair color, he offered me a few choices wrt her hair ties and hat, and a few other options, but this is pretty much the same as the first thing he sent me, and I’m really impressed.  Good price, too.

Maybe I need a mascot for this site.  Certainly quite a bit more emo, dontcha think?  😉

I named her Emi Su.  It’s nominally a Japanese name, but also a play on Emmy Sue, which could be any midwestern cowgirl name.  I thought of everything!

Well, now I’ve got a mascot, a little content, a good framework… now all I need is a draw.  Nope, fresh outta those.  Guess I gotta keep hustling.
